Filming for the new season started in Austin, Texas, as reported by NBC Montana in September, before transitioning to Butte, Montana. Actor Brandon Sklenar, who portrays Spencer Dutton, teased fans on Instagram with a collection of photos captioned “Butte is best,” suggesting he was on location filming scenes for the series.
1923 Season 2: “Essentially the Continuation of the First Season”
Season 1 concluded with several unresolved questions, and in a December 2022 conversation with Deadline, co-creator Taylor Sheridan shared that Season 2 is essentially “the second half of the season.” He also admitted that when he began working on the series, he had no clear idea of which direction the story would ultimately take.
“This is a different experience compared to ‘1883,’ where I had the entire storyline mapped out from the start,” Sheridan explained to Deadline. “With this one, I didn’t have a clear plan in mind. I was exploring the journey as I went along.”
Sheridan also shared that he reached out to the network, expressing his need to create additional episodes to fully bring the story to completion.
“I explained to the network that I needed to divide this into two parts,” Sheridan shared. “An eight-episode block followed by another eight-episode block to properly conclude the story. Wrapping it up in just two episodes wouldn’t do the story justice.”
Based on Sheridan’s statement, it seems likely that Season 2 of 1923 will serve as the series’ final chapter.
Season 2 of 1923 promises “a harsh winter” that will introduce “new obstacles and unresolved conflicts” for the Dutton family, as outlined in the official season synopsis.
